Updated: Apr 8, 2020

You can start growing food as soon as you get these 4 items.

1. Container

Anything that has drainage can be used - use your imagination. Pie plates do nicely. So do styrofoam take out trays. Just, whatever you use, make sure that the container is clean. Very clean. Check out my link here on Pinterest for ideas Containers

2. Seeds

Organic seeds specifically for sprouts and microgrowing are the best to start with.

Although these are pea shoots and they are doing really good.

They are in a styrofoam container with holes poked in the bottom.

3. Growing medium

4. Water - just plain old water. Using a mister is best.

Have everything you need ?

Then you are well on your way to growing food.

STEPS to Growing Microgreens

1.

You need to have a south facing window or grow light.

2.

One inch of growing medium in your container. On the right are our pea shoots. They are in a mixture of peat moss, straw and woodchips. The same mixture we put in our composting toilet.

All containers work if they have drainage.

3.

Scatter seeds close together and tightly over the medium.

4.

Cover your seeds with a very thin layer of your medium about 1/4 inch.

5.

Spray with water

6.

Place in window, or under your grow light.

7.

Mist with plain water, a couple of times a day.

8.

Harvest by cutting them at soil level when the microgreen is about 2-3 inches tall. It will take a couple of weeks. So worth it!

9.

Enjoy your first harvest of FOOD!

Mix with salad or just eat on their own.

9.

Pull out remaining roots and compost them.

10. Water the medium left over, add more growing medium that you need and...

START AGAIN!

Start a few

a few days apart

and you will have

greens all week long!
